Construction projects always have to ensure the safety of their workers, as well as the stability of the structure being built. Scaffolding is used in most construction projects, renovation works, repairs, and paint jobs as they provide the support and stability needed to tackle these projects. Here are the types of scaffolding used in different projects:
Scaffolding in construction projects is a temporary structure meant to hold together, and support workers as they work on building the project. These are often built with steel or plywood, and should be strong enough to support multiple workers, construction materials, and construction tools used in the project.
Scaffolding systems should offer the best support for workers as they work in construction sites. They must be able to withstand a heavy load of construction material as well as multiple workers at a time.
Also called bricklayer’s scaffolding, single scaffolding is often used in brick masonry, as it supports multiple workers, while using a basic design and materials. Single scaffolding consists of ledgers at around 1.2m distance parallel to the brick wall being built.
Single scaffolding has one layer of standards, and each working platform is supported by a set of standards, ledgers, and putlogs. The single scaffolding type is one of the most basic types of scaffolding, and can be made of steel or timber depending on the height and use of the scaffolding system.
Double scaffolding is also called mason's scaffolding, and is commonly used in building stone walls. It is also called independent scaffolding, as double scaffolding makes use of two scaffolding systems to provide support since it is difficult to place putlog holes in stone walls. Rakers and cross braces are used to provide additional support in double scaffolding.
Cantilever scaffolding uses needles to prop the structure up above the ground. This type of scaffolding system is also called needle scaffolding, and is mainly used when the ground is too unstable that it cannot support standards. However, cantilever scaffolding may also be used when the upper part of the wall is being built or is under construction.
Suspended scaffolding makes use of ropes or chains to support a working platform from the roof. This is commonly observed in window washing, as well as repair works, painting, and other similar construction projects. Suspended scaffolding will require construction workers to secure the rope on the roof, and lower the platform onto the required level.
Trestle scaffolding is essentially scaffolding that can be moved from one area to another using a wheeled structure. Wheels on the bottom of the scaffolding can be locked in place during construction, and unlocked for mobility. These can be used in renovations, warehouses, and to conduct repair works.
Steel scaffolding is used in most construction projects as they have a durable interlocking system, and are generally safer for construction workers. Steel scaffolding can be easily built or dismantled, and can be used in multiple construction projects. However, these scaffolding types can be costly.
Patented scaffolding is a type of scaffolding that is readily available on the market, and can be adjusted to different heights using brackets. They may have wheels on the bottom for mobility, and are fitted with special couplings or frames.
With the trend of green building, many projects look to alternative materials to use as scaffolding. Bamboo provides the same support standards as other types of scaffolding, but is lightweight and sustainable. Bamboo scaffolding can be dismantled and reused in another construction project, or composted as organic materials.
